Progress

Things are going great. Lucy appears to be adjusting well to her new accommodations.

We have been using “leave it”, ” find it”, body blocking and treat filled Kongs to help the pups learn how to act around a senior kitty.   Bess Pup is responding well and after an initial round of barking when she first enters the room to let us know that Lucy is there settles down and pretty much ignores her. Bonnie Pup checks her out every now and then but for the most part leaves her alone. And Belle ah sweet Belle Pup goes between checking on Lucy and wanting to join her in the crate. Belle has always loved her crate.

Lucy is enjoying ear scratches, gentle cuddles and carries on conversations with us as verbal kitties do.

Thanks again for your prayers and caring about our sweet girl and the rest of the  pups and kitties.  ~ Margret

I’m Home!

I’m home! I’m glad to be home but I’m not too sure about the accommodations. I’m used to my basement home so this is going to take some getting used to.

My brother kitty Linus is keeping me company so I’m not lonesome.

I’m feeling pretty good. They sent me home with some pain meds to help me feel better. I’m getting around great and I’ve even been climbing up the side of my new apartment. So it’s pretty clear that being a three legged kitty isn’t going to slow me down very much.

My Margret told me how everyone has been praying and writing words of encouragement. I appreciate it more than you know. I may be small at 7lbs but I’m mighty at least that’s what everyone says.

Lucy Kitty Friday Update

I just got off of the phone with our vet office. Lucy is doing “fantastic” she is moving around well, doesn’t have much swelling at the surgical site and doesn’t seem to be in much pain.

She’s not eating very well so they have been giving her fluids and syringe feedings. She is slightly nervous so they are moving her to a quieter part of the hospital.  I’m to call tomorrow morning at 9:00 and if all is well we can bring her home.

Tonight we are shopping for the things that will make the dog crates comfy and fit for a Lucy Kitty.   We have quite a job ahead of us with the rest of her recovery and helping Lucy become at ease with being up in the main part of the house with us.  I believe that is going to be our biggest challenge.       ~ Margret

Lucy Kitty Surgery

Hi All,

Just a quick update. I talked to the vet clinic and Lucy did just fine. They amputated up to her hip so she won’t have complications down the road.

I’m to call tomorrow afternoon to check on her and if all goes well as they are anticipating we can bring her home on Saturday.

It’s really hard not calling more often and I can’t wait until Saturday when she can come back home.

In the meantime we are going to make an “apartment” for her using two of the dog crates. So she will be as comfy as she can be while she recuperates.

The next thing will be to teach Lucy and Bess pup how to coexist since we aren’t comfortable with Lucy hanging out in the basement any longer.  Bess needs to learn that she needs to be gentle and as a friend said “respect her seniors”.  And Lucy needs to stand up to the pup much like she did when she taught Bonnie and Belle that she was boss. All within extremely safe boundaries.  So the next few weeks/months/years should prove interesting. But first we need to bring our sweet girl home and let her recoup.

Once again thank you  for your prayers and words of encouragement. We would appreciate your continued thoughts, encouragement, suggestions and prayers as we all get used to Lucy’s new normal. You guys are awesome.

~hugs,  Margret

Lucy Update

First of all I just want to thank everyone for their prayers, thoughts, support and comments. This has been a tough day and you all helped us through it. You all are awesome!

The good news is that Lucy does not have any internal injuries. She does have a cut on her tongue which is why she was bleeding.

The more difficult news is that her left hind leg was broken into 4-5 fragments. We were given the option of a referral to a surgeon who with plates  and screws could try to put it back together which would be a long and painful recovery or our vet could amputate her leg. Once it heals she won’t be in pain and should be able to manage very well.

Greg and I went into this wanting what was going to be best for Lucy. I asked the vet if this were her kitty what would she do and she didn’t hesitate to say amputate. Given Lucy’s age it’s simply what is going to be best for her. She has surgery tomorrow and if all goes well we should be able to bring her home on Saturday.

The best news was that Dr. Coder said that she is in excellent health for a 16 year old kitty.

Once again thank you!

God bless you and yours.                                                      ~ Margret

Lucy Kitty

We would appreciate prayers for our Lucy Kitty, who is 16.

She prefers to stay in the basement where it’s quieter but tends to come up when the pups are outside or upstairs overnight with us. She didn’t go down to the basement early enough this morning and a couple of the pups chased her and roughhoused with her.

She is currently spending the day with our vet being checked out. She has bruising and a possible broken back leg. They will also check for internal injuries.  I will find out more this afternoon.

Thank you,                                                   Lucy’s My Margret

Almost But Not Quite

This morning My Margret and I went to see Dr. Coder so she could check my ears.

My Margret put me in the backseat with my tennis ball. You’d think she would know by now that I’m a co-pilot not a backseat driver. So I jumped into the front seat where I belonged.

While we were waiting My Margret knew I was nervous so she was talking to me and calling me her sweet girl. I liked that.

Dr. Coder said that after 2 weeks my ear infection while better still isn’t gone. So she said that she was going to flush out my ears and put in an antibiotic that would last for two weeks. That didn’t sound like fun to me and I didn’t want to go with her but My Margret but she told me I had to.  I also have to have steroid pills but I think I heard something about hot dogs…

By the time we left I had had enough so I pretty much pouted all the way home and didn’t even take the treat My Margret gave to me.

After we got home I thought it over and decided that both My Margret and Dr. Coder were just trying to help me feel better.

So all is good and I even invited My Margret to give me a tummy rub. Which she did!

Bessie and Her Stuffie

Every day when I come home from work the pups meet me at the door. Then Bessie pup runs into the living room, grabs a stuffie, jumps up on the couch and plops herself over the back of it to say hi to me again.

Tonight I went to take her picture and quick as a flash she spit out her stuffie and posed.

Then she decided to snuggle with her stuffie.

Then she picked it back up and hung on to it all in the space of a couple of minutes. This is a classic Bessie and stuffie pose.
