Pup and Kitty Updates

Nothing exciting has been happening lately, just a lot of day to day normalness.

Bess continues to mature into her 1 year old self and next month marks the one year anniversary that this bouncy loveable pup joined our family.   She has proved to be just as good as her sisters when it comes to making her people feel better when they are sick.

Bonnie and Belle are enjoying the fact that it’s still dark when we wake up now and push the envelope when it comes to “please, can we sleep just a little longer?”    They often will go outside then come back in for an early morning snooze before starting the day!

Linus is doing better about sitting in my lap without chewing on my clothes or blanket. I am learning how he likes to be petted so he doesn’t think I’m playing and start the play biting.

And Lucy? Well we’re still trying to convince her that staying in the basement isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.  Over the past couple of months the combination of having weekend company,  Greg and I being gone for a weekend, Bouncy Bess wanting to play and just changes in Lucy’s routine make the basement seem really good to her.    Occasionally she makes an appearance and when she does we welcome her with open arms and forehead bumps, in a quiet understated way of course.   We are working on soothing her fears and Bess is doing pretty good “leaving it” when she would rather “play with it”

That’s it for now.  Have a good day everyone!

Ear Wash and Gotta Go Chimes

We are re-teaching Bessie to ring the “gotta go” chime when she has to go outside. I’m not catching the serious intense looks she gives me when she has to go.  Re-teaching this includes a treat being held behind the chime so she rings the chime. The door opens and she gets the treat and goes outside.   Belle of course noticed this, walks up to the “gotta go” chime, looks at it, looks at the treats that sit on the dryer by the pup porch door, turns to look at me with another eye sweep towards the treats in an obvious “Where’s my treat?” look. “Belle pup, you already know how to ring the chime.”   Said pup gave me a disgusted look and walked out through the open door to the pup pen.

Part of our new routine is to swab out the pups ears once a week to ward off ear infections.  Belle of course is the ear infection queen so it’s important to do this for her. But Bess and Bonnie need it too, we just have to convince them of this.   So one at a time, with the other two out in their pen, armed with treats, Q-tips, and ear wash I set out to swab their ears.

They each had their own way of saying “no, thank you I don’t want you putting that swabby thing in my ear, but wait does it taste good, I want to taste it. why can’t I taste it?  No? well I will take the treat thank you very much!  Belle of course was the champ (even though it’s not her favorite thing to do) since she knew the treat was coming. It will get better… 🙂

Belle and Hot Dog Withdrawls

We are three days past Belle’s last dosage of her various medicines for her hot spot and double ear infection.  Greg’s schedule at work got crazy  requiring him to work some very long hours. So after the first few days of us tag teaming to give Belle her meds I took over the task solo.   Belle was a rock star, by then she knew the drill and would gobble up the pill infused hot dog, then would trot into the living room and with a “come on Girl’ while patting the couch cushion would jump up,  lay down and let me swab out her ear canals and put in the drops then after some cuddles and love led the way to the kitchen for her Beggin Strip.

Now did she love having her ears messed with? Nope. Did she even remotely like having her ears messed with? Not so much.   I was gentle but quick and she would do her best to convince me that her left ear didn’t need to be looked at, at all.  Of course it did because that was the worse out of the two.

Now as I said we are 3 days out and both morning and night Belle still comes up to me and gives me the “you forgot something” look that she does so well.   I tell her that her pills are “All gone, You’re better!!!” (all said in perky happy voice that annoys me so I can only imagine what it does to her.)  All she knows is that she still wants her twice a day hot dog!  Hang in there Belle Pup, Sunday and the newly introduced to our routine weekly ear wash swab is coming for you and your sisters so you can tell them all about how awesome those Beggin Strips are!

Such is life with our pups!

Bedtime

So our pups sleep upstairs uncrated with us and we made the choice to have them do this. Having said this I thought I would share some of the silliness that can happen as the result of this choice.

Typically when we go to bed Princess Belle  drapes herself over the foam wedge that I sleep on due to health reasons.  She gives me the same regal Cleopatra look that she does when she beats me to the corner of the couch that we “share” in the evenings that simply says “I win!” If she could stick out her tongue and say “pbbbtttt” she would.

Bess jumps up on the bed in all of her wiggliness with whatever toy she has brought to bed and asks us if we would like to play one more time before we go to sleep. We usually decline her offer although we thank her for offering.

Bonnie simply comes up lays down on the blanket or on the floor by Greg’s side of the bed and says “goodnight”. That’s my sleepy girl!

Bess has been doing better sleeping all night. Now when she decides we need to party during the night she jumps up on the bed, stands on me, while doing her Darth Vadar breathing (if she has a toy in her mouth) and in all hopefulness says “can we get up, please let’s get up!” to which I reply from under the covers I have thrown over my head, “It’s still bedtime, go back to sleep.”  And to her credit she gets off of me, jumps down from the bed, sighs loudly and lays down on the floor until the alarm goes off at 5:00am

When for some reason she really has to go outside she does the above plus burrows under the covers to lick my face,  if that doesn’t work she goes and gets Belle.  While Bess is standing on or very near me licking me, Belle is at the same time using her head to try to roll me out of bed. Belle is a very strong and determined pup and while she hasn’t rolled me out of bed yet the combination of the two usually works to get me up. If like last night that doesn’t work, they go get Bonnie to help them, Bonnie’s contribution is to stand by my side of the bed and lick my arm, fingers, hand.

I have learned that if they get, “I would rather be sleeping” Miss Bonnie in on the action they mean business! Now the trick becomes to convince them I am awake and to stop licking, head butting, and standing on me so I can get up out of bed in order to take them downstairs and into the pup pen.  Usually Bess when I tell her I’m up regardless if it’s in the middle of the night or in the morning responds by laying on me instead of sitting on me. which effectively hinders the response that she was trying to get.

Our pups have proven themselves to be smart and resourceful so I have no doubt she’ll soon figure that out as well.

Pup and Kitty Updates

Bess and I have started our third round of obedience classes. In class we are reinforcing polite greeting, learning how to walk next to another dog and not freak out, and how to bring her focus from what’s happening around her back to me.   Greg has been taking Bess on walks and she is using what she has learned in class on their walks.  I call that a success.

Greg likes to give the pups a treat when he brings them in the house from the pup pen.  As a result Miss Bonnie has been ringing the “gotta go ” chime  and when we go to let her out she turns around and sits which is what they are to do in order to get a treat.   If that wasn’t enough Belle and Bess now come running when they hear the bell so they can get a treat too.   They tend to give me pouty faces because I don’t give them a treat when they come in. If you can’t beat them you might as well join them and I  decided today to be consistant and am giving them treats when they come in as well. My justification besides not wanting to be the recipient of pouty faces is to use the treats as an incentive to teach Miss Bess how to be polite so she will stop pushing her sisters out of the way in her excitement over pretty much everything.

Linus and Lucy have been pretty much doing their own thing but popped in to say hi!

July Pupdates

It’s official at 10 months Bouncy Bessie Sprout Stubborn Puppy Alligator Jaws otherwise known as Bess is bigger than Bonnie and Belle and it’s taking some getting used to.  When she walks away from me she reminds me of the Slinky Dog toy of Toy Story fame, she has at least 4 different sways at the same time.

Bess is starting to look so grownup that when she acts like the puppy she is she sometimes catches us off guard.

Bess

Bess

She and Linus have declared a truce and occasionally will sit quietly close to each other, however now Bess is having to be reminded that Lucy Kitty is completely off limits.

Bess is doing much better sleeping until closer to 5 am. She now starts to wake me up around 4:50am which is doable. Now if I could just get her to sleep in until at least 6:00am on weekends we would have it made!

Bonnie and Belle have finally convinced her that slowing down long enough to snuggle is a good thing. I think she is starting to like it.

We’ve been still practicing polite greeting when folks come over to visit.  A big thank you to Gerry and Carolyn for their help last Saturday.

Lucy who usually hides when folks come over decided to come out for a visit. I can’t tell you how rare this is.

Linus decided to not visit that day but wanted me to show his latest photo. He loves hiding behind curtains.

Thanks to thunder parties we pretty much conquered our fear of thunderstorms, we are now moving on to fly swatter parties.  I’m thinking a conga line might be in order.  Da, da, da, da, da, swat. Da, da, da, da, da, swat…..

4th of July Weekend

We had an incredibly busy and fun family time over the 4th of July holiday weekend. We have 6 grandkids most of whom are still pretty little.  Our pups although loving and sweet are still a bit, ok a lot,  rambunctious for our little ones so the pups don’t  interact with the kids very much yet.  Some of the kids like to look through the window of the pup porch door and say “hi” or play “find it” as long as the child gate is in between them.   Bonnie and Belle pups who are 3 years old usually settle down after about 5 minutes but 5 minutes is still proving to be too long.  Bouncy Bess  10 months old takes much longer than that but I am confident that with time, patience and perseverance the pups and kids (that want to) will one day be able to be in the same room at the same time. 🙂

The precious little people in our life.

The precious little people in our life.

Of course the pups came in at night and slept up in our room with us like they usually do. This morning though when it was time for them to go out into their pup pen, Bonnie told me that ” she didn’t think she would go outside today. She was perfectly fine on the couch and would like to stay there thank you very much.”  I convinced her that she would have a lot more fun outside and out she went with a ” Okay! FINE! look on her face. 🙂

Last night before going to bed Bess started to bark at something on one of the kitchen chairs, fully expecting to see one of the kitties I saw this instead.

Lab Puppy

Lab Puppy

One of the girls had put the lab puppy toy on the chair so he could eat supper and to Miss Bess he seemed real!   It took awhile to convince her that it wasn’t real and a bit longer to convince her that he was a people toy and not a Bess pup toy!

As for the fireworks I was happy for the pups sake that we live far enough out of town that they didn’t seem to be bothered by last night’s fireworks although there are more tonight so we’ll see how they do. Since this afternoon they haven’t let either Greg or I out of their sight so they might not care about the tonight’s fireworks either. Time will tell.

Bess and the Fly Swatter

So I discovered the yesterday that our Bessie is afraid of the fly swatter.  She’s never seen one before and certainly hasn’t been teased or chased by one.  She was in the kitchen with me when I swatted a fly, she jumped and ran into the other room then turned back with a cocked head to look at me plainly asking what was that thing!   I showed her that it wasn’t anything to be afraid of but she didn’t believe me.

Tonight I had to swat another pesky fly and this time Bess ran down to the basement landing.  I laid the fly swatter down so she could sniff it. She wanted nothing to do with it and didn’t want to walk past it to come back up to the kitchen.  A couple of minutes later Belle pup walked down to the landing, looked at Bess turned and walked back up the stairs past the fly swatter,  through the kitchen, and in to the dining room. The next thing I knew up came Bess from the landing.

Sometimes it takes a big sister to make things a little less scary.  Thanks Belle!

Belle’s First Car Show

We enjoy going to classic car shows. We decided to go to one tonight and in an effort to help Belle become comfortable in new situations we took her with us.

Some of her new experiences included walking across railroad tracks, walking into a crowd of people of all ages. She heard an ambulance siren and loud music. She had a Great Dane come up and try to say hi and was petted and greeted by Bob a good friend of ours.

Overall she did well but about  20 minutes into the event she was starting to get anxious so Greg decided that we had stayed long enough for Belle’s first time.  We finished the night off with ice cream from Johnny K’s which Belle totally loved.

A tired out Belle

A tired out Belle

Bonnie and Belle are 3 years old!

Our goofy girls turned 3 years old yesterday.  I can remember when they were in the mischievous puppy stage people telling us that they would settle down when they turned three and it seems so far away.  Well it wasn’t that far away, our older pups are three and while they have settled down they are still sweet, slightly less mischievous, quirky, very loving pups.

Happy 3rd bday Bonnie and Belle

Yesterday when I tried to get a picture of just the two pups Bouncy Bess (almost 10 months) bounded into the shot and struck a pose.  Belle was less than thrilled 🙂
